Playa del Carmen beaches get Blue Flag certificate

The Foundation for Environmental Education in Mexico awarded Solidaridad (Municipality containing Playa del Carmen) City Hall the Blue Flag certifications for the Pelícano, Calle 18, Punta Esmeralda, and Xcalacoco beaches for season 2022-2023.

FEE staff in Mexico explained that these badges recognize the work and effort from Playa del Carmen dependencies in terms of environment protection, and high standard reach.

In order to reach the Blue Flag certificates, the beaches accomplished to maintain excellency in terms of water quality, security, services, established protocols, and environmental education. Beaches must count with certain services to be eligible for this badge, including public access, public restrooms, showers, information modules, storage areas, and security staff.

Early this year, Solidaridad’s Maritime-Terrestrial Federal Zone (Zofemat) started procedures with the FEE in Mexico looking to certificate public beaches, which is now a reality. There are more beaches being prepared to apply for this certificate in late 2022.

Talking about when will the inclusive beaches enabled, it informed that Punta Esmeralda beach will be remodeled. Also, works are being done for another beach to be added near Pelícanos, in order to offer quality services and enable visitors to access and enjoy the sea with less effort.
