Is Cancun open?

Is it possible to travel to Cancun right now? You may have this doubt if you had to postpone a trip to Cancun due to COVID-19. In this post, we’ll answer the question: “Is Cancun open?”

Given the recently declared pandemic, Cancun, as most destinations worldwide, has temporarily suspended all touristic activity. Hotels, eco-parks, tour operators and airlines have dropped their operations in a drastic way, even shut down for a defined (or undefined) period. Checkpoints have been established all around Cancun Hotel Zone and other high-traffic areas to verify transit reasons in order to keep all citizens safe.

The good news is that the temporal closing may be coming to its end. Soon, the answer to the question “Is Cancun open?” could be “Absolutely”. The Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo announced the possible resumption of operations of several airlines in June, following the guidelines given by the Health Secretary. This would give travelers from several countries the opportunity to take direct flights to this destination. Truth is that many new hygiene measures will exist in order to guarantee travelers’ and operators’ health and safety. However, the State Government may postpone this re-opening as a protection measure.
