Location

It is the largest transboundary reef in the world. Contains the second-largest barrier reef in the world. It extends over approximately 1000 km, along the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. It is key to the protection of sea turtles, about 60 types of corals and more than 500 fish species.

What is it?

It’s the maritime complement of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. It includes five states of southern Mexico and seven Central American countries.

Its biological wealth is explained by being a bridge between two continental masses, North and South America. Two oceans bathe its coasts, the Pacific and the Atlantic. The rugged territory gives rise to a wide variety of landscapes. From lakes and plains to mountains, volcanoes, reefs, and islands.
