Cancun will celebrate its 56th anniversary in April 2026

Anniversary 56th of Cancun on April 20, 2026.

Cancun, one of the youngest cities of México and one of the most idyllic cities in the Caribbean, will be celebrating its 56th anniversary on April 20th, 2026.

It’s not a coincidence that we’re starting the month of April, and for that reason, we want to keep you updated on this celebration and how to celebrate this special occasion with us.

History of Cancun

Although we know Cancun is a famous, popular city known for its beaches and vibrant nightlife, it is actually a relatively new city, built only a few years ago.

At first, Cancun was just an uninhabited island, surrounded by jungle, mangroves, and wildlife. It was an area where there were only a few fishermen. It was an area that was probably never considered a tourist destination until April 20th, 1970, when the Mexican government launched a new, interesting project. First, it created the Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (known as FONATUR) in order to promote tourism and develop tourist destinations in the country.

For that reason, Cancun was chosen as the perfect place to carry it out, considering its strategic location, natural beauty, and weather. In 1970, the building of the infrastructure started, and four years later, Cancun received its first commercial flight in 1974.

Over time, the first hotels and resorts began to spring up in the area precisely to meet the growing demand from domestic and international visitors.

Cancun’s anniversary should not go unnoticed. For this reason, the authorities of the Municipality of Benito Juárez have prepared a special program to celebrate this important date by involving citizens.

In addition, to strengthen local pride and identity, a wide variety of activities have been organized so people can take part. The best part is that tourists are also invited to join and experience the local culture.

In fact, as part of the celebration, a special agenda has been planned for almost the entire month of April. Here are the dates and activities:

  • 10 abril: Workshop “Mural mi Identidad”
  • 11 abril: Ruta Mar y taller “Descubriendo mi entorno. 56 Años de Historias de Cancún”
  • 12 abril: Walking Tour con Tiziana Roma y Paseo Cancúnense
  • 16 abril: Exhibition “Todos somos agua”
  • 17 abril: Floral tribute to the pioneers
  • 18 abril: Desfile y Show Cancúnense (parade and show)
  • 29 abril: Presentación “El Primer Cancún Tomo I”

The most expected event for locals is the concert by the cumbia band “Los Ángeles Azules,” which will take place on Sunday, April 19, at Malecón Tajamar, located in front of Plaza Las Américas, known as one of the most popular shopping centers in the area. This concert is open to the public and completely free, so get ready to go and dance to some great cumbia!

Why is Cancun’s 56th anniversary important?

Cancún does not turn 56th every year. It is important for the local government to celebrate this day to highlight the identity of Cancún and honor the city’s history, even though it is still a young city. A good way to do this is by creating cultural, historical, and community activities where everyone is warmly invited.

Other ways to celebrate Cancun’s anniversary

Another way to celebrate is by combining local activities with tourist activities. For example, you can plan a beach visit in the morning and attend the Los Ángeles Azules concert in the afternoon.

You can also attend the April 18 event, where a parade and show will take place at Ayuntamiento de Cancún (City Hall), located on Tulum Avenue, to learn more about what the city represents. Or, if you prefer, you can join the walking tour, which will also include family-friendly activities at the beach. After that, you can stay and enjoy the refreshing turquoise water while you relax in the sun.

Other ideas include visiting archaeological sites like El Meco or the San Miguelito Archaeological Site to learn more about Mayan civilizations.

You can also shop like a local at Market 28, a well-known place where you can easily find local products, souvenirs, and delicious traditional food from the region.

Conclusion

Cancún’s 56th anniversary is a local and national celebration that should be enjoyed in the best way: with historical and cultural activities that represent it. Not only are citizens invited, but visitors can attend and learn more about the history and everything that makes Cancún what it is today.

On April 20, Cancun invites you to learn more about its history, its people, and its traditions—beyond the beautiful beaches of the Hotel Zone. Celebrate this special day in a special destination.

Cancún is a place for everyone, and everyone is part of it. Celebrate with us what Cancún is today!
